State wildlife biologists are proposing a return to a statewide nine-day general rifle season deer hunt and 13-day general spike bull elk season in 2008.

The Division of Wildlife Resources will present its proposals for regulation changes to Utah's 2008 Big Game Guidebook at a series of public meetings being held across the state starting Tuesday.

Input from the meetings will be shared at a Utah Wildlife Board meeting Nov. 29, when the regulation changes will be finalized.

The Southeastern and Southern regions have been limited to a five-day deer hunt in an attempt to lower the number of animals taken. But surveys show hunters take more deer during the five-day hunt than the nine-day hunt.

Allowing the hunt to run over two weekends allows people with commitments to work and school to get out on their free time.

The DWR is proposing that the general spike bull elk and any-bull elk hunts run Oct. 4-16 in 2008.

Here's a schedule of the meetings:

Tuesday - Southern Region, Hurricane High School, 345 W. Tiger Blvd., Hurricane, 5 p.m.

Wednesday - Southeastern Region, John Wesley Powell Museum, 1765 E. Main St., Green River, 6:30 p.m.

Nov. 8 - Northeastern Region, Western Park, Room 2, 302 E. 200 South, Vernal, 6:30 p.m.

Nov. 13 - Central Region, Springville Junior High School, 165 S. 700 East, Springville. 6:30 p.m.

Nov. 19 - Northern Region, Brigham City Community Center, 24 N. 300 West, Brigham City, 6 p.m.
