Outdoor Notebook: National Ability Center's horse show and more

The National Ability Center in Park City is hosting its annual Fall Horse Show Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The family-friendly event is designed to be a fun experience that provides riders with and without disabilities a chance to demonstrate their riding skills.

The equestrian program at the National Ability Center provides private and group lessons for people with and without disabilities, a hippotherapy (described by the American Hippotherapy Association as "a physical, occupational and speech therapy treatment strategy that uses equine movement") program and Camp Giddy Up.

Lunch and concessions will be available for purchase during the show. Proceeds will benefit the horse program. Call or e-mail Raeshell Sorensen at 435-200-0986 or raeshells@discovernac.org.

Museum field trips

The Utah Museum of Natural History on the University of Utah campus has scheduled three fall field trips to introduce people to historic spots in Utah's outdoors.

Take a trip to see the Spiral Jetty formation at the Great Salt Lake and Golden Spike National Historic Site on Oct. 20 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Go on a fossil hunt in the House Range and Drum Mountains on Oct. 27 from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. The final outing, on Nov. 10 from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m., will take participants on a guided trek to ancient rock-art sites along Interstate 70 in Emery County.

Basic Wilderness

Life Support

The Basic Wilderness Life Support class, developed at the University of Utah School of Medicine, is designed to teach people how to prevent and treat injuries and illness common in the outdoors. A one-day class is being held Oct. 20 at 9:30 a.m. at the Salt Lake REI store, 3285 E. 3300 South, in East Millcreek. The course includes morning lectures at the store and an afternoon outdoors (weather-permitting) participating in hands-on scenarios. At the end of the day you will receive your BWLS certificate. Audubon events

Great Salt Lake Audubon is holding a free panel discussion on "What does it mean to drive green?" Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Sugar House Garden Center in Sugar House Park. Brent Singleton, recipient of the Presidential Environmental Youth Award and EPA's corporate level Clean Air Excellence Award; Andre Shoumatoff, president of the Utah Bio-diesel Cooperative;

and Jon Schlee, owner of EcoMoto, a green retailer, will be a part of the panel.

Join Great Salt Lake Audubon for a birding trip on the Jordan River Parkway Wednesday at 8 a.m. Meet at the Parkway parking lot on 4800 South. Call Bob Huntington at 801-595-8748.

Free REI clinics

Podcasters Chris Newton and Jerry Fuller will talk about adventure travel across the world today at 7 p.m. at the Salt Lake store, 3285 E. 3300 South, in East Millcreek.

Sheryl McGlochlin will lead a clinic called "Hiking the Wasatch and Beyond" Oct. 18 at 7 p.m. at the Sandy store, 10600 S. 230 West.
