Hike of the week: Great Western Trail to Bald Mountain - East Canyon
This is an archived article that was published on sltrib.com in 2007, and information in the article may be outdated. It is provided only for personal research purposes and may not be reprinted.

Description: From the parking area, the trail starts next to the green communication building and climbs gently on the aspen ridgeline. The trail flattens on top and has nice views of the East Canyon area. At 1.2 miles, the trail drops into a large meadow. Looking south, you can see the top of Bald Mountain, the only rounded hilltop that is barren. From the meadow, the trail climbs slightly in scrub oaks, then drops into a conifer grove as you make your way to the lowest point of the trail. At 2.3 mile into the hike, you come to the bottom of the drainage saddle. From the bottom, the trail climbs steeply into aspens. You'll see a couple of "No Trespassing" signs. Stay on the trail. From the aspens, you enter a beautiful maple grove before moving onto a sagebrush and grass-covered hillside. At this point, you can see your final climb to the top of Bald Mountain. The top is bare with no shade, but the views are spectacular. Looking west is Little Dell Reservoir, Parleys Canyon and the Salt Lake Valley. Take it in!

Directions: From Interstate 80, take Highway 65 to East Canyon. It's about 9 miles to Big Mountain Pass and parking area.
