State wildlife biologists report the number of canvasbacks has reached an all-time high and that this is the first time in 35 years that Utah waterfowlers have been allowed to take two canvasbacks and two redhead ducks in the same day.
Youth waterfowl hunt
Hunters 15 and younger can get a jump start on the waterfowl season with a special youth hunting day Sept. 29. All of Utah's state waterfowl management areas and federal refuges will be open to youth hunters who have completed a hunter education course, hold a current hunting license and are accompanied by an adult. Accompanying adults are not allowed to shoot. Shooting opens at 6:52 a.m. for the hunt.
Turkey permits increased
The Utah Wildlife Board earlier this month approved an increase of wild turkey hunting permits from 3,020 to 7,706 in 2008.
The Utah turkey hunt takes place in the spring; in 2008, three hunting seasons will be held on most units. The first begins April 12 and the last season ends May 31.
The first two seasons provide a limited number of permits and hunters must stay in the unit from which they draw the permit.
The third season is 27 days long and twice as many permits will be available than for the first two season. In the Northern, Central and parts of the Northeastern regions, turkey hunters will be able to hunt almost any part of the region.
Applications for 2008 wild turkey hunting permits will be available starting Nov. 28 at www.wildlife.utah.gov. Turkey applications will be accepted only online this year.
