'Planet's Greatest Climbs' part of Reel Rock film tour

The second annual Reel Rock Film Tour visits Salt Lake City Wednesday with a stop at the Tower Theater, 876 E. 900 South.

The tour features "King Lines: Chris Sharma's Search for the Planet's Greatest Climbs" and "Committed," a film documenting the legendary British appetite for hard and dangerous rock climbing. Clips from other films also will be shown.

The tour is being presented by Petzel and Momentum Climbing, with Mike Call as host. Tickets are $10 in advance - available at Momentum Climbing, 220 W. 10600 South, Sandy - and $12 at the door. Visit www.reelrocktour.com for more information and a teaser video.

Birding trips

Great Salt Lake Audubon is holding its monthly bird survey of the Mountain Dell Recreation Area in Parleys Canyon on Wednesday at 7:30 a.m. Call Jack Clark (801-255-7989) or Sylvia Gray (801-532-3486) to confirm and get details for a meeting point. Beginning birders are welcome and carpooling is encouraged. Check with the organizers to confirm each trip.

Fun Family Day

Starvation State Park, the Duchesne Chamber of Commerce and Duchesne City are holding a Fun Family Day on Sept. 8 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Regular park fees will cover all activities, snacks and beverages.

Events include a photo contest, children's art contest and a fish recipe swap. Drawings and giveaways will be held throughout the day. Call 435-722-4598 for more information.

State parks recognized

Utah State Parks and Recreation is one of three finalists for the National Gold Medal Award presented by the American Academy for Park and Recreation Administration in partnership with the National Recreation and Park Association. Tennessee and Georgia are the other states in the running. The award, which is presented every other year, will be announced Sept. 26 at the National Recreation and Park Association Congress and Exposition in Indianapolis.

Free REI clinics

Noted cycling author David Shields will talk about his new book "Tour de Life: From Coma to Competition" Tuesday at the Salt Lake REI store, 3285 E. 3300 South, in East Millcreek, and Sept. 6 at the Sandy store, 10600 S. 230 West. Both programs begin at 7 p.m.

The book is the true story of Saul Raisin, a promising young cyclist who was in a coma after an April 2006 bicycle accident but recovered and expects to compete in pro cycling. Raisin is now training in Salt Lake and Shields will explain why he thinks the young rider will eventually win the Tour de France.
