Outdoor Notebook: Triathlon, Railroader's Festival and more

The XTERRA Mountain Championship Off-Road Triathlon is being held Aug. 17 and 18 in northern Utah. The race features a 1.5K swim in Pineview Reservoir, a 30K mountain-bike ride and a 10K trail run. Half-distance race and relay team competitions are also available.

The XTERRA Mountain Championship is the last of four regionals in the XTERRA America Tour. The finale, the XTERRA USA Championship, will be held in Nevada on Sept. 30.

The Utah event includes free concerts and the XTERRA Kids ZONE, which is free for children 12 and younger.

Railroader's Festival

Golden Spike National Historic Site in northern Utah is holding the 31st annual Railroader's Festival Saturday.

The Jupiter and No. 119 replica steam locomotives will be fired up, and tours of each cab will be conducted throughout the day. Re-enactments of the Last Spike Ceremony will happen at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. A restored, 1950s-era rail motorcar, known as a "speeder," will also be on hand.

The visitor center will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Contests and games will be held throughout the day, and food will be available. No entrance fee will be charged.

Golden Spike National Historic Site is 32 miles west of Brigham City and is reached by taking exit 365 off Interstate 15 and then via state highways 13 and 83. Call 435-471-2209 ext. 29 or visit www.nps.gov/gosp for more information.

Survivors at the Summit

The 11th annual Survivors at the Summit event is being held Saturday at Snowbird as a fund-raiser and awareness-raising celebration for the Cancer Wellness House.

Events include a pancake breakfast on the Plaza Deck followed by a hike or tram ride to Hidden Peak. The 3.5-mile hike represents the challenges that people of all ages and all kinds of cancer face. People whose lives have been touched by cancer will be honored with a sea of yellow flags with their names on them on top of Hidden Peak during a Celebration of Life event at noon.

The pancake breakfast is $3 per person, and there will be raffle tickets for sale for $3 per ticket or five for $10. All proceeds go to the Cancer Wellness House. Call the Cancer Wellness House at 801-236-2294 for more information.

Birding trips

Great Salt Lake Audubon is holding the following trips. Beginning birders are welcome and carpooling is encouraged.

Friday - Canyon Walks, Lambs and Mill Creek, 8 a.m. Meet at the REI parking lot, 3300 S. 3285 East, East Millcreek. Call Allene at 801-467-3960 to confirm.

Wednesday - Look for migrating flocks of songbirds and white-winged crossbills during a trip to Brighton in Big Cottonwood Canyon. Meet at the parking lot at the entrance of the canyon by 7 a.m. Call Colby at 801-598-4367 to confirm.

Free REI clinics

Six adventurers will share their tale of a journey across the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Salt Lake store, 3285 E. 3300 South, East Millcreek. The team trekked, climbed, sailed and paddled down the Kongakut River to the Arctic Sea to promote efforts to protect wildlife and land and benefit the Colorado Cancer Foundation.

The Sandy store, 10600 S. 230 West, is holding the popular GPS 101 clinic Aug. 16 at 7 p.m. Learn the basics of global positioning system from an REI navigation expert.
