The Utah Shotgun Showdown, sponsored by Sportsman's Warehouse, is July 14-15 at the Provo and Heber Valley gun clubs. The multi-discipline competition includes 25 skeet, 25 five-stand and 50 sporting clay targets on the first day and 25 singles, 25 long yardage and 50 doubles trap targets on the second.

Cash prizes will be awarded for highest overall score and high gun in each of the individual categories in men's, women's and junior divisions.

No child left inside

The Trust for Public Land and Kennecott Land are hosting a free evening discussion with Richard Louv, author of Last Child in the Woods, on July 12 at 6 p.m. in the Santy Auditorium, 1255 Park Ave., in Park City.

Louv will discuss how nature-deficit is impacting today's youth and how getting them involved in outdoor activities can help prevent obesity, attention disorders and depression.

Explore series

The Utah Rivers Council will hold the following events as part of its Explore summer series outings program.

Float the Weber River with URC on Wednesday. A day-long paddle float through nine miles of lower Gray Canyon on the Green River is being held July 14. Catch the scenery, see petroglyphs and run Class I and II rapids. The outing is free and starts with a 9:30 a.m. launch near the town of Green River. The outing is not suited for children under 14.

Armchair astronomy

Join Rockport State Park officials for an "Armchair Astronomy" program Saturday at 9 p.m. at the Highland day-use area to learn about constellations. The program is free with park admission. Call 435-336-2241 for more information.

GPS clinic

The Cabela's store in Lehi, 2502 W. Grand Terrace Parkway, is holding a free GPS clinic Saturday from 1 to 3 p.m. Meet outside on the south side of the store.

Weaving workshop

Anita Hathale, an award winning weaver, is holding a Navajo weaving workshop at Edge of the Cedars State Park Museum Monday through July 13. Learn the basics of weaving. Tuition is $325 and pre-registration is required. Call 435-678-2238 for more information.

Audubon birding trips

Great Salt Lake Audubon is holding a trip Wednesday for its monthly survey of the Mountain Dell Recreation Area in Parleys Canyon. Meet at 7 a.m. in the southeast corner of the ShopKo parking lot in Sugar House. Call Jack (801-255-7989) or Sylvia (801-532-3486) to confirm.

Kickball league

Free REI clinics

Learn how to make a bicycle your main means of transportation at a Bicycle Commuting 101 clinic tonight at 7 p.m. at the Sandy store, 230 W. 10600 South. Dan Sites will talk about gear, route finding and laws concerning cyclists on city streets.

An "Introduction to Canyoneering" clinic is being held at the Sandy store on July 12 at 7 p.m. Dennis Fisher will present pictures, stories and tips to those interested in this outdoor adventure sport.

On Tuesday, the Salt Lake store, 3285 E. 3300 South, in East Millcreek is holding a Map and Compass Skills Workshop at 7 p.m. REI navigation expert Slater Wayment will present the clinic, which is designed to help those interested in learning how to use maps and a compass.
