A proposal to change snares used by trappers and the number of cougar hunting permits will be discussed at a series of Regional Advisory Council meetings held by the Division of Wildlife Resources (DWR) this month.

The DWR is proposing trappers be required to use breakaway snares, which allow large animals - like deer, elk, cougar and bear, for example - not targeted by the trappers to escape unharmed when they are accidentally caught.

The DWR is also proposing a number of cougar permits that would likely lead to about 300 mountain lions being taken during the 2007-08 season. An average of 311 cougar have been killed the past three seasons.

Input from the public and regional advisory councils will be presented to the Utah Wildlife Board, which will vote to accept or decline the proposals when it meets on Aug. 8 to approve the 2007-08 furbearer and cougar proclamations.
