Hike of the week: Bowman Trail to Baker Spring - Mill Creek Canyon

Description: The trail splits immediately at the picnic area; take the Bowman Trail. It follows above the creek for a short while before you cross it. After a heavy canopy of trees and little sunshine, you enter Mount Olympus Wilderness Area. The trail stays shady until you reach White Fir Pass. On the fifth creek-crossing, you leave the creek and the trail becomes steeper heading southeast. At 1.2 miles in, you come to the first of three switchbacks before White Fir Pass. At the pass, take a break and check out Thayne Peak across Porter Fork. Leaving the pass, the trail turns southeast, smooths out and heads toward the gulch. As you approach the gulch, the trail turns south and climbs to a saddle with views of Mount Raymond. Take in the beauty of the peak on the sitting log. After your break, you come to a trail junction at 3.1 miles; stay to the right. An aspen grove welcomes you to Baker Spring. The spring flows from a small pipe, next to the trail. If you have the time, hike up to Baker Pass and climb the peaks of Gobblers Knob or Mount Raymond. Note: Dogs must turn around before Baker Pass to protect our watershed.

Dogs in Mill Creek Canyon: Salt Lake County requires that dogs be leashed in the entire canyon on even-numbered days. They are allowed to be unleashed on odd-numbered days except in developed areas.
