Decontamination

station added

A new quagga-mussel and zebra-mussel decontamination station opened over Memorial Day weekend at the Wahweap Marina in Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. The new station, which is operated by Aramark, can handle multiple boats at the same time with four hot-water, high-pressure washing systems.

All boats launched in Lake Powell must be certified as quagga- and zebra-mussel-free to avoid spreading the exotic species. Visitors with boats must display a certificate on their dashboard indicating that their boat is free of mussels. A $50-an-hour fee is charged to have the decontamination washes at all stations in the recreation area. Most powerboats are expected to cost about $25 to wash. The fee structure will be reviewed in several weeks.
