Lake City
Gregg Bromka, Falcon, $12.95
Our dry spring and warmer-than-usual weather has made many high-elevation trails rideable earlier than normal. If you're itching to check out new territory, local rider and veteran trail-book writer Gregg Bromka has a new book out titled Bicycling Salt Lake City, a guide to road- and mountain-biking trails.
Bromka has written several other books covering cycling in Utah, including Mountain Biking Utah, an overall guide to the state, Mountain Biking Utah's Wasatch Front, and last year's Mountain Biking Park City and Beyond.
Like those guides, Bromka's latest offering is accurate and detailed and has easy-to-follow directions, all of which surprisingly are lacking in many guide books.
This book serves as a guide to some of the best mountain-biking rides in the Salt Lake area, since fat-tire riding is Bromka's first love, but the focus is mainly on road rides.
The rides are broken out by general location, and easiest to hardest. Some are no-brainers that even newbie bikers would know about, such as the canyon roads that line the Wasatch Front. Other rides are linked-together, biker-friendly experiences Bromka and others have mapped out through trial and error.
One nice part of all the road-ride descriptions is the "margin of comfort," which details bike lanes and the width of the road's shoulders.
