Marbled godwits, and much more, at annual bird festival

The ninth annual Great Salt Lake Bird Festival is May 17-22 with birding trips, workshops, lectures and educational booths at the Davis County Events Center, 151 S. 1100 West, Farmington. Many of the events are free.

The marbled godwit is the spotlight bird of the festival. Bridget Olson from the Bear River National Migratory Bird Refuge will talk about research involving satellite transmitters attached to the godwits.

Ron Rohrbaugh, director of the Ivory-billed Woodpecker Recovery Project at Cornell's Lab of Ornithology, is the keynote speaker. His address will take place in conjunction with a Dutch oven dinner May 19.

Denny Olson, also known as Professor Avian Guano, will do several humor presentations throughout the festival.

Orienteering Club has year's first event May 19

The Orienteering Club of Utah holds several events each year for beginning to advanced orienteers. The first event is May 19 at the Jordan Parkway in Draper. Visit www.o-utah.org for more information and a list of other events.

Climbing Alliance plans fundraising party

The Salt Lake Climbing Alliance is holding its third annual fundraising party May 3 at the Front Climbing Gym, 1450 S. 400 West, Salt Lake City. A $10 donation - $15 at the door - is good for food and drink at the party. Entry into an open bouldering competition is $25 and $30 day of the event. Birding trip in Parleys

Great Salt Lake Audubon is holding a birding trip to the Mountain Dell Recreation Area in Parleys Canyon Wednesday. Meet at the ShopKo parking lot in Sugar House at 8 a.m. Call Jack at 801-255-7989 to confirm.

Star parties this weekend

The Salt Lake Astronomical Society is holding a free public star party Friday at dusk at Harmon's, 7755 S. 700 East, Midvale.

Another free party is Saturday at 8:45 p.m. at the Stansbury Park Observatory Complex. Mike Wilson of the Salt Lake Astronomical Society will give a presentation on Saturn.

Register for Scofield fishing tournament

Scofield State Park is the site of a fishing tournament May 12 from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Registration opens Wednesday at 8 a.m. and will continue until the 49-angler limit is reached. Only one fish per participant is allowed in the tournament. Call 435-687-2491 for information and to register.

Campsites still available for Memorial weekend

The following Utah State Parks have campsites available for reservations on Memorial Day weekend: Antelope Island, Bear Lake, Deer Creek, Jordanelle, Red Fleet, Rockport, Scofield, Snow Canyon, Starvation, Steinaker, Utah Lake, Wasatch Mountain, Willard Bay and Yuba.
