Utah Division of Wildlife Resources officials last week released 30 desert bighorn sheep in the Dirty Devil drainage north of Lake Powell. The 19 ewes, five lambs and six rams were caught at various southern Utah locations where bighorn numbers had reached population goals.

Nets fired from a helicopter caught the animals, and they were transported to their new home in horse trailers.

The bighorn were given health examinations and vaccinations and their ears were tagged. Six were fitted with radio collars. The transplanted wild sheep will supplement an existing population on the west side of the Dirty Devil River.
