Salt Lake cyclist Sarah Grant recently completed her journey across the country in an effort to raise scholarship money for SPLORE, a nonprofit group that provides accessible outdoor recreation experiences to children and adults with disabilities and specific needs.
Grant, featured in a Tribune story in May, rode the last of her 3,637 miles from the Pacific to Atlantic oceans Aug. 7. She started the ride June 19.
"It is true, I made it coast to coast. Along with 44 other riders. We all helped each other along this tremendous journey and it was difficult to leave," Grant wrote in her blog - http://www.sarahsride.net/ - about the end of the ride. "I had tears rolling down my cheeks as I headed to the beach today and was greeted by my ever-so-supportive parents. The comments along the way and the staff and riders that were there made the trip a success."
Grant reports the riders ate 2,000 pounds of bananas, dealt with more than 150 flat tires and climbed more than 110,000 feet during the ride.
Grant's initial goal was to raise $20,000 in scholarship money for SPLORE, but she reports $55,000 in contributions were made.
