Learn, learn, learn to row at Great Salt Lake

Great Salt Lake Rowing, U.S. Rowing and Concept2 are hosting a national Learn to Row Day on June 10 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Great Salt Lake Marina. This free event is designed to give those who have always wanted to try rowing, but never had the chance to hit the water, an opportunity to learn the ins and outs of the sport with experienced rowers.

Events include hands-on ergometer lessons, on-the-water rowing experience and information on year-round rowing on the Great Salt Lake and elsewhere in Utah. Wear suitable clothing. Call Glenn Eurick, Great Salt Lake Rowing president, at 801-541-3577 for more information.

Float trip on the Green

The Utah Rivers Council, in conjunction with Holiday Expeditions, is holding a day float on nine miles of Gray Canyon on the Green River on June 10. Enjoy the views, check out petroglyphs, ride class I and II rapids and learn about the benefits of Wild and Scenic River protection.

Nature/bird walks

The Layton Wild Bird Center, 1860 N. 1000 West, holds free nature/bird walks on Saturdays. The walks are designed for birders at all levels, and families are encouraged to participate. The schedule for June is: Saturday, Adopt a Blue Bird Trail; June 10, La Plata Trip No. 1 (leave the store at 7 a.m.); June 24, La Plata Trip No. 2 (leave the store at 7 a.m.).

Jordan River cleanups

Great Salt Lakekeeper will be holding five large-scale and several small-scale cleanups on different sections of the Jordan River Parkway this summer. The first will be June 10 on the Parkway West Valley City and South Salt Lake between 3300 South and 2100 South. The cleanup will run from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., and the mayors of Salt Lake County, West Valley City and South Salt Lake will participate.

Volunteers will meet at Redwood Park, 2320 S. 1100 West in West Valley City. Pre-register for the event by calling Great Salt Lakekeeper at 801-485-2550 or Salt Lake County Volunteer Program Services at 801-468-2185.

Fire restrictions

State park officials have announced restrictions on open wood fires beginning today at Antelope Island State Park. Only charcoal fires in designated fire pits and gas grills are allowed on the island until further notice.

Restrictions already have begun at Gunlock, Quail Creek and Sand Hollow state parks. At those parks in southern Utah, gas grills with control valves are allowed, but open wood and charcoal fires are not. Smoking is allowed in a closed vehicle only.

Free REI clinics

Adventurer Cary Marger will present a slide show on his three summers and one winter working for the National Science Foundation at McMurdo Station, Antarctica. Marger photographed the unique landscape and wildlife. He will also talk about his experiences. The presentation is tonight at 7 at the Sandy store, 10600 S. 230 West.

Rudy Moulden, a law enforcement officer for the Bureau of Land Management, will talk about his efforts in investigating and prosecuting criminal actions and vandalism of state antiquities and rock art. The talk is Friday at 7 p.m. at the Salt Lake store, 3285 E. 3300 South, East Millcreek.

Learn how to go light with "Lightweight Backpacking on a Budget" at the Salt Lake store Tuesday at 7 p.m.
