Basin & Range Seminar
Great Salt Lake Audubon is hosting its 24th annual Basin & Range Seminar June 10-11 at the Maple Grove Campground on the Fishlake National Forest. Formal classes on the unique ecology of the Great Basin (birding, wildflowers, butterflies, stream ecology and geology) are offered and a potluck dinner will be Saturday, with an informal gathering to follow.

Cedar Breaks to open
The scenic drive and visitors center at Cedar Breaks National Monument will open for the summer season Saturday. The visitors center is open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. Geology talks are offered on the hour from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. There is still snow at the park; trails and the campground are closed until the snow melts. The Point Supreme Campground will open no later than June 17.
Two-for-one camping
Utah State Park managers are offering a two-for-one midweek camping special throughout the 2006 season. Reserve a campsite and get two nights for the price of one Sunday through Thursday at the following state parks: Deer Creek (Great Horned Owl Campground only); Escalante; Fremont Indian; Green River; Huntington; Hyrum; Millsite; Otter Creek; Quail Creek; Red Fleet; Rock Cliff Area at Jordanelle; Scofield; Starvation; Steinaker; Utah Lake; Willard Bay (Willow Campground only) and Yuba.

Free REI clinics
River guide and geologist Christa Sadler will present a photographic expedition from her 277-mile trip down the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon from Lees Ferry to Lake Mead. Sadler traveled by raft, dory, motor rig and paddleboat. Sadler will also read from a collection of river tales. The presentation is tonight at 7 at the Sandy store, 230 W. 10600 South.
Adventurer Cary Marger will present a slide show on his three summers and one winter working for the National Science Foundation at McMurdo Station, Antarctica. Marger photographed the unique landscape and wildlife of his surroundings. He will also talk about his experiences. The presentation is Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Salt Lake store, 3285 E. 3300 South, in East Millcreek.
Constellations event
Bring a lawn chair and flashlight, and join astronomer Ray Cyr on Friday and Saturday at Snow Canyon State Park in Ivins as he points out basic constellations. The event is from 8:45 to 10 p.m., weather permitting. And don't miss out on viewing Jupiter, Saturn and Mars. Space is limited and registration is required. Call 435-628-2255.
Campfire program
Historian Jerry Springer will talk about the life and Western art of painter and illustrator John Clymer at a campfire program Friday at Wasatch Mountain State Park in Midway. The program will include slides. It begins at 8:45 p.m. at the campground amphitheater. For more information, call 435-654-1791.
Hawks up close
Join volunteers from HawkWatch International on Saturday at Hailstone Recreation Area/Jordanelle State Park in Heber for a program about birds of prey. The program begins at 7 p.m. at the amphitheater near the visitor center. For more information, call 435-782-3030.
Holiday weekend events
Learn how to make pioneer handkerchief dolls, pick up a needle and quilt, dip candles and make a pioneer lantern as part of Memorial Day Weekend activities Saturday through Monday at Antelope Island State Park near Syracuse. There will also be chances to learn pioneer games such as farm ball and family sack races. Participants will need to bring an empty vegetable or soup can to make a pioneer lantern.
