Movie buffs have their Sundance Film Festival. Outdoor enthusiasts get the Banff Mountain Film Festival.

The 29th annual Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour reaches Utah on Monday and Tuesday at Utah State University in Logan. The event then will tour Utah.

The festival, an annual international competition for films on mountain subjects organized by Mountain Culture at the Banff Centre in Alberta, Canada, is held each fall. After the show, the best entries hit the road for a world tour.

The University of Utah's outdoor program has been hosting the film festival for 13 years and contributing proceeds to the Utah Avalanche Forecast Center since 1996. Organizers have raised more than $18,000 for the center in that time.

Rob Jones, manager of the university's outdoor program, says he typically sits down with the World Tour host an hour before the show to determine which films to screen. Each screening, featuring different films, will run from 2 to 2 1/2 hours each night.

"Sometimes a film gets good reviews, but isn't received very well at the shows. We want to give people the best," he said.

Titles this year include festival award-winners "Alone Across Australia," voted Best Film on Mountain Environment and the People's Choice award; "Sinners," an ode to deep powder and the sheer love of skiing, named Best Film on Mountain Sports; and "Daughters of Everest," a documentary on the first-ever Mount Everest expedition of Sherpa women, named Best Film on Climbing.

Other films range from whitewater exploration to freeride mountain biking to base jumping in Norway. Of local interest is the movie "Women of K2," which was produced by Salt Lake resident Jennifer Jordan. For more information, visit http://www. banffmountainfestivals.ca/tour/.
