Outdoor notebook: Spot birds and help researchers during Great Backyard Bird Count
This is an archived article that was published on sltrib.com in 2010, and information in the article may be outdated. It is provided only for personal research purposes and may not be reprinted.

The 13th annual Great Backyard Bird Count is being held Feb. 12-15. The national event is free and attracts volunteers in the tens of thousands each year. Volunteers can count birds in their own backyards, at local parks or at wildlife refuges. Checklists from the count help researchers at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, the National Audubon Society and Bird Studies Canada track the rise and fall of species in geographic areas. More than 93,600 checklists were submitted via the Web in 2009.

Participants can count birds for as little as 15 minutes and then report their sightings to www.birdcount.org. Visit the site for information on participating in the Great Backyard Bird Count.
