Outdoor notebook: Slip on the Santa suit and ski free at The Canyons

The Canyons in Park City is hosting its annual Santa Skis Free event Dec. 19. The first 50 people to show up dressed in a full Santa costume will ski or board for free that day. Then from Dec. 23-25, the real Santa will be on the slopes at The Canyons handing out goodies. Visit www.thecanyons.com for more information.

Dec. 5 » Sylvia Gray is leading a trip aimed at beginning birders to the Salt Lake City Cemetery from 9 a.m. to noon. Stroll the cemetery counting and identifying all the birds seen. This is a great warmup trip for the annual Audubon Christmas Bird Count being held across the state in December. Meet at 9 a.m. at the southwest corner of the cemetery (4th Avenue and N Street). Dec. 7 » The December Birding in Utah class is being held at 7 p.m. at the HawkWatch International offices, 2240 S. 900 East, Salt Lake City. Tim Avery is leading the class, which costs $5.

Free REI clinics

Dec. 3 » Learn the basics of snowshoeing from an REI expert at 7 p.m. at the Sandy store, 10600 S. 230 West. The clinic will focus on the ease of snowshoeing. The proper attire and skills you will need will also be discussed.

Dec. 7 » Naturalist and photographer Bruce Thompson will lead a clinic on winter wildlife tracking at 7 p.m. at the Salt Lake store, 3285 E. 3300 South, East Millcreek. Learn about the tracks and other remainders local wildlife leave on the snow.
