The Ogden Nature Center, 966 W. 12th St., in Ogden is hosting its annual Creatures of the Night Halloween event on Oct. 23, from 5 to 8 p.m.
Activities include a non-frightful evening or trail-side education and adventures. Costumes are welcome, but dress for outdoor weather. Ogden Nature Center naturalists will transform into nocturnal animals and share their tales of survival. There will also be live animals including owls, snakes, spiders and toads, as well as treats, face painting and games. You can also enter the center's pumpkin carving contest. Entries must be submitted by youth ages 3-16 on Oct. 21-22 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. All entries will be displayed at the Creatures of the Night Event. Utah tops for elk
Boone and Crocket, the official scoring club for big game trophy animals, has released a list of the top hunting states by species since 2000. Boosted by the new world record, non-typical bull taken in the state in 2008, Utah is now the No. 1 trophy-producing state for elk with 120 new entries in the books. Arizona is second with 86, and Montana third with 47. Utah, with 17 entries, shows third in the bison category behind South Dakota (42) and Wyoming (36).
