Outdoor notebook: Head to Heber City for the Sheepdog Championship

The annual Soldier Hollow Classic Sheepdog International Championship is Sept. 4-7 in Heber City. Sheep dog trial teams from South Africa, Switzerland, Italy, Norway, Canada and the United States will compete. Events throughout the holiday weekend include the Ultimate Canines Dog sport and comedy show, Splash Dogs, and various booths. The championship round of the competition starts at 9 a.m. on Sept. 7. Daily tickets are $12, $11 for seniors, and $7 for kids ages 6-15. A family pass is $32. Tickets are more expensive on Sept. 7. Visit soldierhollowclassic.com for more information.

Antelope Island Balloon Stampede

Antelope Island State Park on the Great Salt Lake is hosting the Antelope Island Balloon and Kite Stampede Sept. 4-6. Activities start at 5 p.m. on Sept. 4. A "balloon glow" will be held at dusk each day. A morning balloon launch will be Sept. 5 and 6 at 8 a.m. An evening balloon launch is scheduled each evening at 7 p.m. (weather permitting). Fishing movie screens

"Rivers of a Lost Coast," a documentary about eccentric anglers and the history of the steelhead and salmon fisheries of northern California, will be shown Aug. 31 at Brewvies, 677 S. 200 West, in Salt Lake City. Tickets are $10 at the door.

Harvest time at Wasatch Mountain

Visit Wasatch Mountain State Park in Midway on weekends throughout September to celebrate the annual apple harvest in Huber Grove. There are several varieties of apples, which are not treated with pesticides. Cost of picking apples is $3 per bag. Call 435-654-1791 for more information.

Free REI clinic

Joel Jacks will lead a clinic on Dutch oven cooking on Sept. 3 at 7 p.m. at the Sandy REI store, 10600 S. 230 West. Jacks will talk about oven sizes, proper cooking temperatures and how to season and clean your oven. Recipes will also be shared.
