Outdoor notebook: Disney film screening; dinosaur quarry re-opens

The Swaner EcoCenter will screen the new Disneynature and BBC film "Earth" on March 25 at 7:30 p.m. at Redstone Cinemas in Kimball Junction. Narrated by James Earl Jones, "Earth" tells the story of three animal families and their journey across the planet. Admission is free to existing and new Swaner EcoCenter members, but RSVP is required. To become a Swaner member, or to RSVP, call 435-649-1767, ext.113. Mountain art at Westminster

Westminster's Outdoor Recreation Program is presenting The Spirit of High Places, a narrative and photography presentation on the world's greatest mountain ranges by Westminster's Global Studies administrator and photographer Jonathan Duncan on March 26, 7:30 p.m., at the Bill and Vieve School of Business at Westminster, 1840 S. 1300 East, Salt Lake City. Duncan's travels include the Himalayas, the Patagonian Andes, Antarctica, the Alaska Range and many of the high peaks of the American West. The event is free and open to the public. Powder Mountain adds Snowcat tour

Powder Mountain Resort's new Sunset Snowcat Tour takes guests to mountain peaks between 8,600 and 9,100 feet with views of Ogden Valley, the Wasatch Mountains and beyond. The tour culminates with alfresco dining as the sun sets over the Wasatch Mountains.

Tours depart from the Mountain Adventure Center at Powder Mountain 1 1/2 hours prior to sunset. Cost is $75 for adults and $25 for children 12 and younger. Reservations are required. Tours are limited from to four to 10 guests. Arrangements can be made for private parties and customized tours. Dinosaur quarry re-opens

The Cleveland-Lloyd Dinosaur Quarry, one of Utah's best known excavation sites, will re-open for the season on March 27. The quarry offers interactive displays and exhibits, including a display on the excavation history of the site, a fossil preparation table, replica skulls of animals found there, and a mounted Allosaurus skeleton. Visitors can also watch paleontologists excavating fossils inside its covered building. The quarry is open Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, weather permitting. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays; noon to 5 p.m. on Sundays. Entrance fee is $5 per adult ; children 15 and under are free. Educational groups should contact Michael Leschin at 435-636-3619 to schedule tours. The quarry is approximately 30 miles south of Price.

Redwood Recreation Center

A climber with heart

March 31 » Veteran climber Kelly Perkins underwent a heart transplant in 1995. After a long recovery and being coached by her husband Craig, Kelly shocked the medical world by becoming the world's first heart transplant recipient to reach the peak of some of the world's most challenging mountains, including Mt. Kilimanjaro. In 2003, Kelly and Craig returned to the Swiss Alps to climb the Matterhorn.

On March 31, 3:30 p.m., Kelly will climb the Millcreek REI's climbing wall with several transplant recipients. At 7:00 p.m., she will talk about resuming her climbing after the transplant at Bryant Middle School, 40 S. 800 East, Salt Lake City. Outdoor navigation class

March 28, 9 a.m. » Spend a day outdoors and an hour indoors with National Geographic GPS expert Jeff Caulfield and REI navigation specialists to learn how to use a GPS unit in the field. Participants should have some familiarity with GPS and/or have attended REI's GPS 101 evening clinic. Learn route-finding skills, such as how to transfer waypoints from your PC to your GPS unit, how to use the U.T.M. grid system vs. latitude and longitude coordinates, how to create custom maps and how to pinpoint your location. Pre-registration is required in person or by phone at the REI Sandy store, 230 W. 10600 South, or 801-501-0850. Tuition is $25 for REI members, $35 for non-members.
