Utah resorts, with the exception of Alta and Deer Valley, which cater only to skiers, have worked hard in recent years to attract snowboarders with terrain parks full of trick-worthy features. Here's a roundup of terrain parks at some of the state's larger resorts and the specific features they offer, some of which are also used by skiers.
Brighton » This Big Cottonwood Canyon resort, long a favorite with boarders, has three parks: My-O-My is situated at the top of the mountain; Candy Land, for beginners, is at mid-mountain; and the Majestic Park is on the lower mountain. All of them are connected, essentially forming a top-to-bottom park with rails, fun boxes, hips, spines, table tops, a super pipe and other features. Parks are accessible by the Majestic Quad and Crest Express lifts and are open during the regular resort operating hours.
The Canyons » Utah's second-largest resort (in terms of acreage) has two terrain parks. A progression park on Painted Horse off the Saddleback Express lift is designed for beginners learning new tricks. Respect Terrain Park, located off the Sun Peak Express lift, is for more advanced riders. Steve Duke, the resort's terrain park manager, has been working on some new innovative features for both parks this year. They include "mushroom jibs," which riders can jump on to do spins; "stall jibs," also to jump on but usually barrel-shaped and located at the top of a jump; a wall-ride with a handrail on top; and several city-style rails. This year, the resort will bring back the "gong," which skiers or riders hit as they jump to make that distinctive sound.
Solitude » This resort's park caters primarily to families, with smaller snow-based features built low to the ground. But this year Solitud plans to add two metal rails as well as a few larger tabletops for more intermediate boarders and skiers.
Snowbird » The Little Cottonwood Canyon resort boasts a terrain park with a superpipe that's roughly 380 feet long with 18-foot walls, a big draw for intermediate and expert riders. Other features incude two mini-tabletop jumps, two rails, two medium jumps, three fun boxes, three 30-foot rails and a 18-foot-high quarter pipe at the park bottom.
Park City Mountain Resort » This large resort features four terrain parks and one of the largest superpipes in North America.
