As most of us, I revere the Founding Fathers of this nation. Recently, I ran across this quotation from George Washington: "If men are to be precluded from offering their sentiments ... the freedom of speech may be taken away, and dumb and silent we may be led, like sheep to the slaughter."

Freedom of the press is closely related to freedom of speech. Our current president determined which media outlets could attend one of his press conferences. Perhaps we should look back over 200 years in history for guidance in the precious matters of our freedoms. Regarding those freedoms, how did our first president know?
