Letter: Free fares on UTA every day

(Rick Egan | The Salt Lake Tribune) UTA bus drives up State Street in Downtown Salt Lake City, Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2019.

Thank you, George Pyle, for your Oct. 9 commentary supporting free fares on UTA. Cleaner air is a top priority to Salt Lakers, and this would be a strong, simple change that would get some cars off the roads.

Each time UTA offers free fares, there is an immediate increase in ridership. Also, lowering costs for our poorer Salt Lakers, who must rely on UTA for transportation, would be a nice boost for their finances.

Many of us are using “last mile” investments like bicycles, e-bikes and e-scooters now. Free UTA would extend the potential use of these innovations deep into our suburbs.

Let’s all support a new policy and a new slogan for cleaner air in Salt Lake: “UTA: Free every day.”
