Letter: Utah under a Mexican flag

(Rick Egan | Tribune file photo) Flag designer John Martin speaks about the new Utah flag he designed, during the discussion of one of the two bills that could lead to the adoption of a new state flag to the House Government Operations committee Feb. 13, 2019.

Since some are considering redesigning the Utah state flag, maybe they should also reconsider the date on that flag. 1847 was the year the pioneers settled in Mexico, not U.S. territory.

The area in which the pioneers settled did not become a U.S. territory until 1848, after the Mexican-American war, and did not become a state until 1896, after the people of Utah abolished polygamy.

If not for this war the people of Utah would be Mexican citizens living under the Mexican flag.
