Letter: Gov. Herbert's Hanukkah op-ed reasserted American values

Steve Griffin / The Salt Lake Tribune Gov. Gary Herbert and First Lady Jeanette Herbert are joined by Lt. Gov. Spencer Cox and Abby Cox as they address the media to discuss their primary election victory on the west steps of the Governors Mansion in Salt Lake City Tuesday June 28, 2016.

Winston Churchill famously said, “If Hitler invaded hell, I would make the devil at least a favorable reference in the House of Commons.” In like manner, I must applaud Gov. Gary Herbert for his op-ed concerning Hanukkah in the Tribune.

Gov. Herbert has many shortcomings, but at least he had the courage to use the occasion of Hanukkah to speak out for inclusiveness, diversity, humanistic and spiritual values, and speak out against the wave of bigotry, exclusiveness and white supremacy sweeping the country like a malignancy, aided and abetted by Donald Trump.

Herbert stopped short of naming Trump, and mentioned by name only Steve Bannon — the latter perhaps only because of Bannon’s attack against Mormons, but nonetheless, the commentary reasserts true American values a lot more forthrightly than we are hearing from most Republican politicians.

Good job, governor.
