Letter: To improve air quality, we’ve got to give up our love affair with cars

Al Hartmann | The Salt Lake Tribune View of unhealthy, polluted air looking south to downtown Salt Lake City from the Utah Capitol steps Wednesday Jan 18. It's a red air day according to Utah Dept. of Environmental Quality guage.

In response to “Air quality in northern Utah worsens as inversion hits” by The Associated Press on Dec. 9: As the inversion settles along the Wasatch Front, a new norm settles as well — poor air quality. We would revolt at anyone throwing trash onto our local highways, but we readily sit idling in our cars to keep warm.

These two things are synonymous, both are littering public goods. Until we see the two as equal, we will continue to sit in our filth. What can we do? 1. Stop idling our cars. 2. Limit one-person car rides by combining trips. 3. Start biking to destinations and use UTA.

We’ve got to give up our love affair with cars. Policy makers, set an example and promote alternative transportation. U.S. 89 between Farmington and South Ogden is set to be built into a six-lane freeway and there are zero plans to build bicycle infrastructure or improve mass transit. This is a tragedy and a huge oversight.

Congestion will return to U.S. 89 even with a six-lane freeway. Educate yourselves by Googling the terms “complete streets” and “Copenhagenize.” Don’t sit idling waiting for someone else to solve this problem.
