Letter: In light of sexual harrassment, three key lessons
(Chris Pizzello/Invision | The Associated Press) In this Jan. 8, 2017, file photo, Harvey Weinstein arrives at The Weinstein Company and Netflix Golden Globes afterparty in Beverly Hills, Calif. Weinstein is no longer a member of the Directors Guild of America. A DGA representative said Monday, Nov. 27, that Weinstein resigned his membership effective Monday.
In light of the long list of powerful men accused of sexual harassment, there are a few key lessons everyone should observe.
First, sexual harassment is not just a women’s issue. It is a human issue. Abuse of any kind, performed by a man or woman, should never be tolerated. Using sex as a mechanism to gain power or influence is never appropriate.
Second, while individuals are undoubtedly responsible for their actions, we all share in the blame of silently tolerating this behavior in our workplaces, communities and homes. That tolerance is the reason this issue persists. If we become aware of any misconduct, we must speak up and support others’ right to express their concerns free from consequence.
Third, we must remember that it is not the male gender in its entirety that is to blame, but some selfish individuals. Many men in our community have been strong advocates for women. We must celebrate those men, thank them and encourage more to join the quest for gender equality.
