Letter: Path to Positive Utah initiative is a sign leaders are taking climate change seriously

Chris Detrick | The Salt Lake Tribune A 'Student Resolution on Climate Change' is presented to a giant puppet of Gov. Gary Herbert and a Corporate Monster at the Governor's Mansion during the Utah People's Climate March Saturday, April 29, 2017.

It was a breath of fresh air to hear the news that business, faith and government leaders have come together to address the threats of air pollution and climate change in the Path to Positive Utah initiative.

Obviously, tackling climate change will take a lot more than a press conference, but this initiative is a positive sign that leaders from a variety of institutions are taking climate change seriously. Now it’s time for Gov. Gary Herbert and legislative leaders to show the same courage and address the threat of climate change. We need smart policies that promote the expansion of renewable energy, energy efficiency and assistance for fossil fuel workers as they leave the boom-and-bust cycle of destructive extractive industries.

The time for ignoring climate change is over. Gov. Gary Herbert and legislators should join civic leaders and constituents; it’s time to act on climate.
