Letter: If you don’t understand Mormon policies and beliefs, educate yourself

(Scott Sommerdorf | The Salt Lake Tribune) A rainbow flag frames the LDS Temple from its place at the 8th annual mass resignation in City Creek Park, Sunday, November 5, 2017.

Regarding “I hope they return,” a letter by Peter Brooks, published Nov. 25.

Sir, you state, “As an active LDS person, I do not understand everything about the doctrines and policies of the church, especially the LGBTQ issues. Nevertheless, I support my general and local leaders and proudly keep my name in the rolls of the LDS Church.”

This is exactly what prompts the “head in the sand” opinion many have about LDS followers.

But, I’m confused. If you don’t understand something so important, why would you not make some kind of effort to educate yourself about this issue — and the church’s beliefs about it — before blindly following something which might not align with your personal beliefs?

Others have taken the initiative to do so, and many have decided that the church’s position is simply untenable in today’s world, and cannot follow something they deem so offensive toward other human beings.

Educate yourself in this matter, and if you can be comfortable with what you learn, great. But, if you find otherwise, it just might be time for some serious soul-searching.
