Letter: Echoes of Moore in Utah history speak to where we are on equality

(Brynn Anderson | The Associated Press) In this Sept. 26, 2017, file photo, U.S. Senate candidate Roy Moore greets supporters before his election party in Montgomery, Ala. President Donald Trump’s former chief strategist Steve Bannon is boosting multiple challengers to GOP incumbents and the party’s preferred candidates in next year’s midterm elections.

It’s admirable that local Republican Party elders, such as Mitt Romney and Sen. Mike Lee, are voicing their contempt for what appears to be the not-so-honorable actions of Judge Roy Moore. But, lest we forget, it wasn’t that long ago, right here in Utah, when 14-year old girls were taken as brides, as wives, by men holding (abusing?) positions of power.

Rather than how far we’ve come toward treating women as equals, sadly, it’s more like how far we’ve yet to go.
