Letter: Ability to fight the government is crucial to gun rights crowd

(Allen Breed | The Associated Press) This Feb. 1, 2013, file photo shows a "bump" stock next to a disassembled .22-caliber rifle at North Raleigh Guns in Raleigh, N.C. The gunman who unleashed hundreds of rounds of gunfire on a crowd of concertgoers in Las Vegas on Monday, Oct. 2, 2017, attached what is called a "bump-stock" to two of his weapons, in effect converting semiautomatic firearms into fully automatic ones.

Thank you for printing the letter from Paul Hammond (Oct. 31) concerning the Second Amendment. He states that “the reason for the Second Amendment is so that the population can protect itself from the government.” And goes on to say that we need automatic weapons in order to have a fair fight, if needed, with our government.

His view is amazingly very prevalent on social media. However, you never see it expressed by pro-gun politicians or even the NRA. Why is that?

Could it be because his argument is so frightening and wrong? Those of us who support reasonable gun control need to understand one of the primary reasons people are opposed to any limitations — especially automatic weapons.
