Letter: Let's put glass recycling bins by liquor stores

(Francisco Kjolseth | The Salt Lake Tribune) Salt Lake County Mayor Ben McAdams has asked the state to relocate the liquor store in downtown Salt Lake City at 205 W. 400 South to help reduce criminal activity among the homeless.

We recently were offered glass recycling pickup service in our neighborhood. Being an avid recycler, I think this is a great idea but declined since I already have three “waste” cans at my residence.

We have a general recycling can and a “green can,” in addition to our regular garbage bin. We consistently recycle glass by taking it to one of very few collection spots in the valley, but our volume is not significant enough to warrant a fourth can on the side of the house. Admittedly the bulk of the glass we recycle is beer and wine bottles, which is by far the majority of what I see in the collection bins.

So how about this: Put glass recycling bins at the greatest source of all of the glass — the state-run liquor stores. That way everyone would know where they are and could avoid making special trips to recycle their glass. We could just drop off the empties while stocking up.

Anyone not wishing to be seen at such establishments could go there on Sunday when they are closed.
