Letter: In America, we’re armed and unsafe

So much is said about protecting yourself with the use of guns. Today, we have 1.3 guns per person in our country but we are the most unsafe country among all the developed western economies. The following study (Source: United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, UNDOC) examines firearm homicides per million people:

1. Australia 1.4 homicides per million people

2. New Zealand 1.6 homicides per million people

3. Germany 1.9 homicides per million people

4. Austria 2.2 homicides per million people

5. Denmark 2.7 homicides per million people

6. Netherlands 3.3 homicides per million people

7. Sweden 4.1 homicides per million people

8. Finland 4.5 homicides per million people

9. Ireland 4.8 homicides per million people

10. Canada 5.1 homicides per million people

11. Luxembourg 6.2 homicides per million people

12. Belgium 6.8 homicides per million people

13. Switzerland 7.7 homicides per million people

14 United States 29.7 homicides per million people
