Cannon's defeat

Jason Chaffetz' defeat of Rep. Chris Cannon was more about Cannon's political and administrative acumen (or lack thereof) than any issues. Constituents in the 3rd Congressional District got tired of the poor service they received when contacting his office. With Chaffetz' experience as chief of staff for Gov. Jon Huntsman, voters can at least hope for something better.

Cannon's duplicitous behavior on immigration finally caught up with him, as people started to wake up to the fact that he told Hispanic groups one thing while portraying himself as tough on the issue to the gringos. People weren't so concerned whether he actually supported amnesty as they were that he wasn't willing to be honest about it and adopt a consistent position.

When Cannon stooped to attacking Chaffetz (who lives in Utah County) for residing outside of a gerrymandered district, it showed he was really desperate to hang onto power. His explanation, after the election, that he lost because of the economy showed he is out of touch with reality.

We can all be thankful to Chaffetz for saving us from the guy who wanted to succeed Orrin Hatch in the Senate.
