On June 4, a major musical event took place at Kingsbury Hall, but The Salt Lake Tribune did not see fit to review it. Return To Forever, one of the seminal bands in the movement to blend jazz and rock in the mid-'70s, visited Salt Lake City as part of its first tour in more than 25 years. Downbeat magazine referred to the tour as "one of the most important events in jazz music in 2008." Gov. Jon Huntsman not only attended, but before the show he met with the band and declared June 4 "Return To Forever Day." Lenny White, the band's drummer, proclaimed from the stage that "Utah has the hippest governor in the United States."

The band, consisting of White, Chick Corea, Stanley Clarke and Al DiMeola, gave an incredible performance that lasted almost three hours. As a long-time aficionado of jazz, and as a fan of Return To Forever, I was proud to be part of the enthusiastic and appreciative crowd. The Tribune failed its readers by not covering this landmark cultural event.
