Sugar House rail: By all means, Salt Lake City should study whether to build a trolley system on the old rail spur to Sugar House. Mayor Ralph Becker is searching for ways to pay the $300,000 for a study. Among the questions it must answer is how the city could finance the $40 million project and what its realistic potential ridership would be. We wonder, though, with the airport TRAX line still unbuilt and no plan in place yet for a new public safety building, whether the Sugar House line should be a city priority. The study could help answer that question, too.
Happy trails: Things are getting even better for cyclists in Salt Lake City. A new paved path along I-215, expected to be completed this year, will give them an easier way to head west after crossing the freeway at the mouth of Parleys Canyon on a bridge completed just six months ago. The new trail to Tanner Park is part of plans for the Parleys Creek Trail, that will let cyclists ride from the Bonneville Shoreline Trail in the east-side foothills to the Jordan River Parkway on the west. Salt Lake County says the $3 million trail should be ready for use at least by spring 2009.
