There has been a lot of talk about Geraldine Ferraro's comments about how Barack Obama would not be succeeding in the presidential race if he were not black, that people only vote for Obama because he is black. Yes, some vote for the senator for that reason. There are those who vote for Hillary Clinton because she is a woman, and those who voted for Mitt Romney because he is Mormon.
I am offended not only by Ferraro's apparent racial overtones but by the implication that the people like me voted for him for only one reason.
When the red phone rings at 3 a.m., I want the most qualified, intelligent, level-headed, even-tempered and thoughtful person answering the call. I want Barack Obama, and he just happens to be African-American.
