SLC needs preserving

Salt Lake City is our shining citadel of intellectual freedom and individual, independent responsibility. I fervently hope for a mayoral candidate who would not change that.

Excessive construction in both residential and commercial ventures threatens the serene mood of this mountain-cradled valley. Additional grandiose plans, as bad as Gateway, seem carved in native granite. I see no guarantee of a water supply for all these increases; our major aquifer is dwindling.

Mayoral candidates talk about changing our city. Does anyone talk about preserving it? We know the Republicans are organizing quietly, plotting a big surprise, hoping desperately to take over this freedom city.

There is only one Rocky; no candidate should act like a clone, but the thought of losing our liberties, already diminished by an alien Legislature, is frightening.

Salt Lake City has always been a pleasant, moderate community. Now, unfettered growth is destroying the luxury of spaciousness. Excessive prohibitions threaten its aura of relaxed friendliness. I wish for a candidate to vow to preserve it, with little more than mending, polishing and stewarding.
