'I think that I shall never see . . . ': Salt Lake County Mayor Peter Corroon's plan to add a million trees to the Salt Lake Valley during the next decade will require planting 274 trees a day, every day, 365 days a year. To do that, Corroon will need the cooperation of residents, city governments and private corporations, including Kennecott and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Since trees help clean and cool the air, as well as providing shade and simply dressing up the place, we hope Corroon's seedling plan takes root and grows.
About time: The Bureau of Land Management may have waited too long to close Recapture Canyon near Bluff, but the decision is still better late than never. All-terrain vehicle drivers have already torn up the canyon, but the closure could protect ancient Anasazi ruins that are irreplaceable. Even San Juan County Commissioner Lynn Stevens, an advocate of ATV use on public lands, says the decision is appropriate. But he believes once the problem is "fixed" the canyon could reopen. We disagree. The problem of irresponsible ATV use will require long-term solutions, such as rule enforcement and education, that the BLM has only begun to put in place.
