In the Aug. 9 Public Forum, John Kepros offered the idea of killing prisoners in response to executions by the Taliban.

To back this suggestion he mentioned the Nazis killing 10 civilians for every German death. He wrote that it will make the kidnappers of innocents think twice before acting. The one fact that is omitted is that the executions by the Nazis never worked. The resistance continued until the end of the war.

A determined resistance cannot be stopped by killing some of its members, especially with religious fanatics such as the Taliban. They are not like you and me and really don't care if they die, much less others of their cause.

Killing people already imprisoned only reinforces their belief. The best way to stop, or severely weaken, the resistance is to track down the leadership and kill or imprison those individuals, not by killing the ones we have already imprisoned.
