Cost of coal

When will we connect the dots? On Aug. 9, The Tribune editorial "Mine collapse" states that 308 coal miners have died in accidents in the U.S. alone since 1998 and we can expect expect more in years to come.

Yet we continue our wasteful use of electricity; we can't even be bothered to turn off lights and computers when not in use, can't be bothered to make the switch from incandescent to fluorescent lights, won't buy energy-efficient appliances, all of which collectively save a tremendous amount of energy.

All this means more coal-fired power plants, which means - guess what? - more coal mining.

It's time for us to use electricity more conservatively and more wisely. It's also time for us to become more reliant on renewable energy, which costs fewer lives and helps clean up our toxic air as well. The renewable energy bill in the U.S. House of Representatives would be a good start, but we all need to do our part by using less energy.
