Paranoid leap

I've never seen such a complete overreaction to an opinion as that demonstrated by Kelly Skeen's response (Forum, July 21) to Dave Jensen's indictment (Forum, July 17) of lawless off-road vehicle users.

We all have a right to lawfully use the land for our enjoyment. Hikers in wilderness-quality areas deserve the peace that experience brings. The ORV users deserve to use the multitude of designated trails without being harassed by hikers looking for silence. When Skeen suggests that Jensen wants to close "all trails" to ORV users, he makes a leap only a paranoid and defensive reader could make. What Jensen really wants is what we all want: preservation of sensitive lands and peace when hiking on them.

Mr. Jensen is correct in asking the Bureau of Land Management to better protect sensitive lands from aberrant ORV users, and if that means closing some trails, then so be it. The land preserved by implementing such closures is too important to sacrifice. One ORV going off-trail is all it takes.
