Kirsten Stewart wrote a very informative article (Tribune, July 15, "Think tank tackles social ills") describing the efforts of 130 Utah power brokers "to quietly tackle some of the state's most formidable social problems."

The Health Care Work Group in particular is very exciting. Thirty people, representing essentially all of the major health-care players, are sitting together to discuss a real revamp of our failing Utah health-care system. They are talking, and they are listening to each other, seeking a common good acceptable to all. Wow!

Discussion among that many players, with very diverse aims and needs, is certainly best done in a private gathering. But to wait until September to publish its solutions, without public knowledge or input along the way, will smack of Utah politics as usual, where leaders develop policy behind closed doors, then present solutions to the public as a done deal.

What Ms. Stewart began should continue. The Work Group should give the public, through the press, a biweekly progress report, asking for input, until it presents its solutions to the September legislative interim meeting. An informed public, with input into the process, is a supportive public.
