Poison apple

Recently The Salt Lake Tribune ran several letters criticizing the Palestinian organization, Hamas, for broadcasting a children's program in which a Mickey Mouse-type caricature extols the virtues of militant struggle.

If using the innocence of a cartoon mouse to teach violent resistance to Israeli occupation creates hate, it pales in comparison to the hatred that is being created when Jewish children are taught that God gave the land of Palestine to the Jews.

This is the beautiful apple filled with pure poison. On the outside it seems wonderful: God chooses people for special rights and considerations. But it's the poison inside that infects the mind.

The Palestinians who have lived in this land for millennia are somehow created as lesser beings and therefore have no right to live in the land of their ancestors. This is not a question of character, but a judgment of creation, be it God or nature. Once the mind is infected to see others as lesser beings, anything becomes passable; just look at World War II.

Unfortunately, this poison has infected more than just young impressionable Jewish children. It is firmly fixed in the minds of many of America's most powerful leaders.
