Vouchers now

Two bills were passed by the Utah Legislature funding a school voucher program. One bill has been targeted by groups that have prevailed in forcing a referendum.

The other bill, House Bill 174, went into law and has been determined by the attorney general to be viable to stand on its own with funding. But the Utah Board of Education has delayed implementing the law, so families who have a legal right to choose a better educational fit for their children have to wait.

Wait for what? HB174 should prevail and begin to provide families with choices. There are sufficient funds to provide school districts with new funds and also to fund vouchers. Let's all work together to get this bill up and running for the 2007-2008 school year. Let's focus on students' needs, not lawsuits. I urge the Utah Board of Education to rethink their response and put the procedures in place to implement HB174 for the next school year.
