Tax holiday: Good news! You don't have to pay your taxes this year on April 15. Federal Income Tax Return Day, the most evil of days, falls on a Sunday this year. More good news! You don't have to pay your taxes Monday, April 16, either. It's Emancipation Day, a legal holiday in Washington, D.C., home of the tax man. The bad news: You still have to pay your taxes. Federal income tax returns must be postmarked by midnight Tuesday, the 17th.

Touché: While the state Legislature claims to thank heaven for little girls, little girls can thank heaven for Jon Huntsman Sr., Utah's resident billionaire industrialist. Huntsman used what amounts to a veto his check book to override the Legislature's refusal to provide money for Gardasil, a vaccine that shields females from contracting a sexually transmitted virus that causes cervical cancer. Huntsman donated $1 million to the Utah Department of Health to help provide immunizations to underinsured and uninsured females ages 9 to 26. Conservatives in the Legislature refused to provide money for immunizations, claiming it would increase sexual promiscuity.

Serenity lost: Snowmobilers: Start . . . your . . . engines. And there goes the peace. There goes the quiet. There goes the seclusion. The U.S. Forest Service rejected an appeal by cross-country skiing organizations last week, and now snowmobiles will be invading an expanded area within the Franklin Basin/Tony Grove portion of Logan Canyon. The cross-country skiing in that part of Wasatch-Cache National Forest will never be the same.
