Ryan Spackman and Emily Belnap (Forum, Nov. 24) refer to John James' saying that if people have more than two children, they should be fined. His idea is rather harsh.

However, in their comments, they neglected to address the issue of our rapidly growing population and its effects upon our resources and the lives of our children.

Yes, in America we do have choices, but how many people forget that choices have consequences, and then too often fail to accept responsibility for them? We can't live merely for today. Prudent individuals must have foresight and plan accordingly.

If people truly care about their children, they will plan a family size that will help to control population growth so our offspring will have a successful, bright future. If we allow population growth to run out of control, perhaps down the road, the United States will have to assume the attitude of China in curtailing the number of children couples are allowed to produce.
