Do we need to ask for forgiveness? This is in response to Jim Dublinski's Forum letter of Aug. 31, wherein he derides the publishing of an article by Johns Hopkins political science professor William Connolly. Mr. Dublinski counters with the assertion that we Americans need never ask for forgiveness for our actions.

How nice it must be to live in the smug world of Bushopia where there is no responsibility for one's actions, where, when draped in the divine cloth of conservatism, we can pillage, plunder and murder with impunity, where any perceived villainy can be swiftly crushed with our holy might, a place where we can soundly slumber knowing that God loves us more.

I might not know what patriotism means to all Americans, but I am absolutely certain of what it means to me. I see this horrific catastrophe in Iraq as a total and complete affront to my love for this great country. I am ashamed and I need to apologize to the world. Please forgive us.
